Reparation and Reconciliation - The Martyrs of Disunity, Seeds of the Church's Unity

In response to Pope Benedict's call for concrete acts of Unity, and following the establishment of the Chapel of Reparation at Walsingham and the highly significant ceremony at the Charterhouse to commemorate the martyrdom of St John Houghton and Companions and the Dissolution of the Carthusian Monastery, Unitas is committed to furthering the work of reconciliation of the churches, through promoting a 'new memory' of the persecutions, sacrifices and faithfulness of Catholic and Reformation martyrs, the ecumenism of holiness, that the martyrs' perfect unity with Christ in his death may be fruitful for us all now in finding once more our unity with each other through him.

On 27th May 2006 at Tyburn Convent, Hyde Park Place, London W2, we commemorated all those who endured suffering, martyrdom and death on all sides, Catholics, Anglicans, Protestants, at the time of the Reformation and afterwards, in prayer that their offering of life in the Church and in following Jesus Christ may be bring unity to us, who follow them, in the present and the future: The Blood of the Martyrs, the Seed of the Church. Addresses were made by Dr Peter Elvy, recently vicar of Chelsea Old Church, Cathy Corcoran, Chief Executive of the Cardinal Hume Centre, and the Revd Bill Snelson, General Secretary of Churches Together in England. The event included an Ecumenical Liturgy of Commemoration and Prayer for Unity.

The order of service, the list of the martyrs and the addresses, together with details of other events is now on a special website, The Seed of the Church.
