Pilgrimage, the Journey to Christian Unity

Autumn 2006 and forward
Avila

Over the last few years, important ecumenical contacts in the area of Carmelite spirituality have been strengthened between the pilgrimage parish of Walsingham and the important Carmelite centres of Spain, especially Avila, exploring the spiritual landscape of St John of the Cross and St Teresa.

Unitas is delighted to support this initiative to promote dialogue, shared prayer and common spirituality between Christians in England and Christians in Spain.

In Autumn 2006, Fr Norman Banks, vicar of Walsingham, conducted a twelve day exploration of Carmelite Life and Spirituality with Saint Teresa and St John of the Cross. The first three days were spent visiting sites in and around Avila, including the Crypt Hermitage and the Convent of the Incarnation. There were also visits to Tomes, Salamanca, Arevalo Fonterveros Medina del Campo, Segovia (including its Carmel and the Cathedral), Valladolid and Alcazar.

In 2007 Fr Norman will be leading a pilgrimage focusing on the life and influences of St John of the Cross, past and into the present.
